Message from the GMF Council Chair

Karen Leibovici, Chair, Green Municipal Fund Council     Almost every municipality in Canada is home to a brownfield site.

Though usually contaminated, these sites are hallmarks of our industrial heritage and can contribute significantly to future growth and development. By sustainably remediating and redeveloping these sites, communities can increase their revenues, manage environmental risk, improve public health and revitalize neighbourhoods, among other benefits.

Some municipalities have developed sophisticated approaches to brownfield redevelopment and have been very successful.
Many others, however, are struggling to develop a comprehensive brownfield strategy and to position brownfields as key components of their sustainable development plans.

GMF helps municipalities to bring contaminated sites back into productive use and reduce the need for greenfield development in many ways. We offer funding for brownfield capital projects, along with a suite of brownfields case studiestools and resources and webinars.

Increasing awareness of provincial legislation governing remediation and redevelopment and other funding opportunities is also top of mind for us. We are very proud of our provincial Brownfields Roadmaps, launched this spring in conjunction with OCETA’s Practical Workshops for Brownfield Redevelopment. The roadmaps give a concrete one-page overview of the provincial legislative stages, generic brownfield steps, and federal and provincial funding and incentive programs for brownfield rehabilitation, along with detailed explanations and links to programs and organizations. We have developed four roadmaps so far — for British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec — and plan to release them for other provinces and regions in the near future.

Read on to learn about just a few of the successful brownfield redevelopment initiatives in communities across Canada, and discover the many ways in which GMF can help municipalities and their partners benefit from these undervalued and underused sites.

Have a happy and healthy summer!
